I am new to the school...I have heard the phrase "Dollar Cost Averaging" over and over but do not fully understand what it means or how to apply it to my investing. I was surprised to find that it does not occur anywhere on this site in a search?
Anybody wish to offer a laymens explanation?
Christoper??
thanks gang,
JB
Sure, dollar cost averaging or DCA means you make sequential purchases over time of the same asset. Let's say you are buying XRP and you have 100k. That would mean you purchase XRP for 6 months (100k / 6 = 16.6k). So you would purchase 16.6k each month.
Why would you do this? The reason is it lowers your cost basis (where you bought over time) and spreads out your purchases. It assumes that you can't time the market so it is best to buy when entering an exiting a position over a period of time.
However, if you're new I would recommend (not financial advice) you DCA 3-6 months in to your positions. I wouldn't make it longer that that unless for example your buying say a portion of crypto with each monthly paycheck as part of your savings plan. If you have a lump sum I would either choose 3-6 months.
thank you for that explanation Christopher...
So Basically, is DCA a way to look at your cost of assets as an average over time? So that regardless of the fluctuation of prices your're still getting the assets you wanted, or that you set out to get but more on auto pilot? Using reoccurring buys? Kind of removing the worry of trying to buy only on the dip in price? Or is there a better way of looking at it?
I also appreciate and understand where Eric is coming from with his reply.
I guess we could run the risk of paying more for the asset if the market or if that particular coins value continues to rise exponentially, rather than just getting a bigger amount of it at once initially?...but....?
P.S. Chris, this is Totally unrelated, But I wanted to tell you that Jeff Richardson honored his very generous offer from the livestream the other day to sponsor my enrollment in BitcoinRich!
He is a very cool guy, and as it turned out we are near neighbors here in Middle Tennessee!
